Hide volume knob - AkelGe - 09-15-2023

Hello all,
I am using an HifiBerry DAC+ connected to an amplifier. I adjust volume from the amplifier, so I set the volume in Moode to Hardware, that is 0 dB.

Now I have the volume knob that is faded and, of course, not usable. I would like to have a flag in the settings to hide it while keeping the same space, to avoid misalignment of the other UI elements. I tied to play with the CSS, but I am not that expert and I did not put much effort into it, so I did not come up with a nice solution.

Is there anyone else interested?

I’ve wanted this for a while.

Couple things:

(1) Removing the volume knob breaks the symmetry of the UI which is important from from a design perspective
(2) It's important to provide a visual indicator in the UI showing the volume level

So might change wording to HW controlled or something, and disable those sliders which would be way more accurate Smile

The term "0dB" is pretty much universally used in audio to represent 100% volume level.

(1) ... I've a way in mind to keep the symmetry... the "knob" might then be used as a button to invert the polarity, on the fly. This would really be a serious (essential?) feature, at least under the audiophile perspective.
(2) then there'd be no reason to show the volume level as the attenuation is, the most of the times, performed on an analog preamplifier.

Would this be possilble? Even apart from the volume knob removal.

Thanks

I think the reason it is important to show that the volume is fixed at 0dB is more for those who usually use the volume knob, so they are alerted to the fact that they've made a configuration that will blow their ears off if they don't have a downstream control.  I suppose it could be argued that the volume knob disappearing says that as well, I think it better to say it explicitly in the UI for safety.

As for a polarity inversion switch, I wouldn't call it essential but I can't better chance on a polarity blind test.

The volume knob should be there by default, but under "Preferences" there'd be the option to delete it.
Some records sounds better with inverted polarity. That also depends on the specific playback system.
