Problem: Gave up waiting for root file system device..
#1
Hi Tim, thanks for the Moode project!

Just setting it up on a RPi5 (4Gb) with the PINN bootloader on the SD card, and  a GeekPi DAC which has an Orico 256gb NVMe. But having an issue.

Worked fine when I first loaded it straight from the SD Card. When I reinstalled to use the DAC, it installed it cleanly, but when loading it goes straight to the shell.

Last few lines that show are:

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
- boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
-check rootdelay = (did the system wait long enough?)
-missing modules (cat /proc/modules / ls dev)
ALERT! PartUUID=ef4c4d19-06 does not exist. Dropping to a shell.

and loads up the shell there on.

Any thoughts?

I don't have any experience with boot loader environments but maybe another user can offer some insights.

My advice is to not use the PINN bootloader. Just flash a moOde-only SD card using the Raspberry Pi Imasger program following the instructions in the Setup Guide.

I'm sure that one could chase down the quirks introduced by the PINN bootloader code and make necessary changes but to me, at least, that sounds like Yak shaving.

Kent

Thanks Kent and Tim, problem sorted. Reverted to booting off SD card and using the NVMe for music storage. Got a working streaming device! Cheers.

Glad it's working :-)

IME keeping boot media separate from data storage is best.
