It is a hardware device that also need a python script. It works flawlessly with moOde. It uses a relay. I like the fact that i use a momentary switch to turn on and off my streamer, just like all modern audio systems.
On the attached picture, you can see that I use the momentary switches on the right (2) to turn on, off, play, pause, next and previous. The buttons on the left (1) are linked to 7 different playlists. In addition I have an IR remote, a 16X2 oled display and old school analog vu-meters. The amplifier (3) is beneath the streamer and both use the same IR remote.

Oooh, I like the re-purposing of your old tuner. Very clean conversion. 

Now you have me wondering about some ancient Yamaha gear gathering dust in storage. All those lovely buttons and that black-anodized brushed aluminum panel would add so much class to what is now a hacker's delight!
