Actually @TheOldPresbyope and @Tim Curtis I may have spoke too soon. So my pi goes to my receiver with an aux cord so under the setup options, I have to change the integrated audio setting to firmware mode. When I do this, and then go to the peripherals option and toggle the display, it does not active the touch screen like it did when the integrated audio mode was kernel. I just noticed that there is a note when using this setting that the firmware is headphone only so that explains my initial issue. I guess the only way to get the display to work and use the headphone jack is to install lightdm and launch the gui that way? Guess it's a work around but I don't have DAC so I can't do audio out and HDMI and the same time currently so I'm stuck with the headphone jack.
