So my pi goes to my receiver with an aux cord so under the setup options, I have to change the integrated audio setting to firmware mode. When I do this, and then go to the peripherals option and toggle the display, it does not active the touch screen like it did when the integrated audio mode was kernel. I just noticed that there is a note when using this setting that the firmware is headphone only so that explains my initial issue. I guess the only way to get the display to work and use the headphone jack is to install lightdm and launch the gui that way? Guess it's a work around but I don't have DAC so I can't do audio out and HDMI and the same time currently so I'm stuck with the headphone jack.
Your best bet to avoid the pain and get to the goal of just listening to some good music is to get a DAC board with Headphone out for example the inexpensive Raspberry Pi DAC+ https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/dac-plus/
