This may be an old post, but I'll leave my opinion in case anyone is looking for updated information: I had a similar problem with my initial setup. I found very good results when I investigated the frequency point above which my speakers roll off. Although they play from 51 Hz, there's a logical roll-off starting at 85 Hz for a 5 1/4-inch driver. You can search the web for a frequency graph of your speakers, and there you'll see how the curve begins to drop at a certain point... that's the starting point! So, I nailed my subwoofer's crossover at 90 Hz. Then, I adjusted the volume until the bass is felt but not rumbled... Finally, I had very good results after a good burn-in process.
