The message you get is due to two main reasons:
1, the update is indeed still in progress
2. some error occurred (while parsing the files - bad metadata / access rights / corrupted file)
So, in case of 2, you can investigate the MPD log file ( /var/log/mpd/log ) to see the last successfully parsed file... the following one is somehow breaking things up)

The total number of tracks will be available once the library scan completes successfully.
