Now, with a fresh install... do not touch anything.
Just plug the reduced-library USB stick, do an "update library", or a "regenerate" one, and monitor your system.
After the library is updated, and you also see all the thumbnail images in your library, take the MPD log (/var/log/mpd/log) as fast as you can, or at least before the system eventually freezes on you... as it may contain some clues.

Ok, I have done a fresh install and re-configured as before and all is working fine - no freezing.
I have installed my 'reduced' libray and then looked at the mpd log after an "update library" and it consists, basically, of a set of 'update: added ' lines for each track, followed by:
Code: 2025-07-01T10:13:14 ffmpeg/luodat: Format luodat detected only with low score of 1, misdetection possible!
2025-07-01T10:13:59 exception: Failed to open "ALSA Default" (alsa); Failed to open ALSA device "_audioout": Unknown error 524

followed by an equivalent set of 'update: updating' lines, and finally:

2025-07-01T11:11:14 ffmpeg/luodat: Format luodat detected only with low score of 1, misdetection possible!
I have created a system backup, so finally I need to install my full library and keep my fingers crossed.

Those errors indicate a failed attempt at opening the audio device.
The other errors are about inconsistent / unrecognized metadata, and an internet radio station unreachable...
Now, remove the thumb-drive with the reduced lib, do a library regenerate (this will clean it...), then plug your big-mama-library in and do a regenerate / update whatsoever.
If you can get the same logs, after it has completed, it would be very good, as it could give us some clue, shall the system start to behave like it did...

@ duzeper
Looks like Aussie station 2BOB has changing its streaming service. The URL in moOde's curated list used to work fine here but it now fails the moodeutl -u test. According to radio-browser.info, the current MP3 URL is
Code: http://playerservices.streamtheworld.com/api/livestream-redirect/2BOB.mp3
Just tried it and it seems to be playing fine.
Keeping up with these kinds of changes on the station end is a never-ending challenge.
Do other stations in moOde's curated list play as expected? How about the SOMA stations? They've been very reliable for me.
On another point, you said "I have installed my 'reduced' libray and then looked at the mpd log after an "update library" and it consists, basically, of a set of 'update: added ' lines for each track, followed by...."
Does this mean that many/most of your tracks load and play ok?
I don't recognize the "luodat" format mentioned by ffmpeg. It suggests to me you have some badly formed tracks in your collection which ffmpeg can't figure out (I'm echoing Al here!).
Regards,
Kent
ETA - According to radio-browser.info, 2BOB is now also streaming in AAC
Code: http://playerservices.streamtheworld.com/api/livestream-redirect/2BOBAAC.aac
I tried it quickly and it seems to play also. No time ATM to provide the altered station info for the station editor in moOde.

I'm not concerned about radio sattions, I won't be using Moode for that.
As far as I can tell my audio tracks play OK since the re-install. The initial problem was the RPi hanging up, which is no longer happening.
I will be trying the complete library shortly.

I am now trying to regenerate the music database. I know it is a fairly large library (around 80GB/ 1200 albums/ 11500 tracks) but it is still going after nearly 4 hrs.
I had a look at the mpd log, and judging by the album/track names, it got about 3/4 the way through, but the last line of the log is:
Code: 2025-07-02T10:35:38 mpg123: mpg123_getformat() failed: A generic mpg123 error.
The 'Regenerating the database, progress spinner' is still running but judging by the log, I am not sure anything is happening. Should I perhaps do a restart and try regenerating the database again?

That will give you the same error; and if the error is discriminant for the update process not to finish, there will be no change.
Can you see any log before that one, showing a filename / path? as that would be the last successfully parsed file, and with a bit of logic and luck you might be able to deduce the offending one.
It is a generic error about audio file format, so, if you can just enumerate here the file types (extensions) in your library, maybe we can just spot the one that MPD doesn't seem to like...
Something like:
my file types:
.mp3, .flac, .aac, .ogg, .alac, etc etc etc

The previous line in the log is:
Code: 2025-07-02T10:35:35 update: added USB/0DDA-1C34/Music/Strawbs/Hero And Heroine (Remastered)/06 Midnight Sun.mp3
Do I take it that this was OK and that the next file is the offending one, or that this is the offending file?
There have been over 10300 apparently successfully added files prior to this error, and they are all .mp3 file, as are all my music files.
Btw. in case it is relevant, the first line of the log is as follows:
Code: 2025-07-02T10:31:06 ffmpeg/luodat: Format luodat detected only with low score of 1, misdetection possible!
Also, having looked through the entire log, there are 2 occurrences of:
Code: Warning: Xing stream size off by more than 1%, fuzzy seeking may be even more fuzzy than by design!
but the 'update:added' lines continue after these.

Uh-oh...
then it seems that is not the problem... my thoughts were oriented towards some (many?) entries like the first one, then one like the second, then no more...
Sadly, I am not enough experienced to suggest any more investigation...

Success!
I have unmounted the usb drive, regenerated the database and updated the library, restarted the RPi, re-mounted the drive then regenerated the database (this time it completed successfully) and successfully updated the library.
It now appears to be working properly.
Just one thing, though. This warning still occurs (in the same places as I mentioned previously) in the mpd log, but in both cases, the tracks immediately before and immediately after the warning, all play properly.
Code: Warning: Xing stream size off by more than 1%, fuzzy seeking may be even more fuzzy than by design!
It would seem that there is an issue with the two tracks (I assume those following the warnings) and it would be interesting to know what.
Also, this line still occurs at the start of the log:
Code: 2025-07-02T16:51:27 ffmpeg/luodat: Format luodat detected only with low score of 1, misdetection possible!
